There’s Still Hope

“To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive.”

― Peter F. Hamilton, Judas Unchained

If you know me, you know I am apparently always dealing with some sort of chest cold. This last month it turned in to full blown pneumonia in both lungs. Turns out toddlers don’t care if you’re sick they still demand your full ass self show up and give them everything they demand.

That said, onto more antibiotics and trying to rest without losing my mind.

Some stuff I’ve loved online

30 Minutes With Strangers - A super cool piece of research on how talking with strangers may actually be the good thing to do.

The Loneliness Epidemic - Another post by the Pudding about how important the people we spend time with.

I had used Goodreads for years(probably decades) but never loved my experience. Especially after the 2013 acquisition by Amazon, the general website experience seemed to slide deeper and deeper into dysfunctional.
Starting last year I started heavily using an alternative - The Storygraph. This site was created in 2019 as a direct response to the lack of investment into Goodreads.

Storygraph focuses heavily on its strengths, the graphs, and its updated UI compared to anything Goodreads has to offer. It also has direct-support options, as well as a free tier, which removes one of my biggest complaints with Goodreads - the ads. Since Goodreads is a free product, it heavy subsists on running ads, promoting books into your feed, and linking everything back to the mothership(Amazon) to buy these products.

I’ve been using Storygraph for 2 years now. Last year I double logged everything in Goodreads, this year I’m only logging/tracking on Storygraph. I miss my community I had on Goodreads. I tried to get them to move to Storygraph, but most did not. I pop back in to Goodreads every so often to read some of my favorite reviews, but otherwise that’s just something I’ve had to let go.

It’s made my reading exciting and more focused this year. Storygraph gives you a way to prioritize part of your to-read list so I’m not overwhelmed by everything. Have you read anything good lately? Let me know.

Thanks for reading!
